The best I've played yet was Medieval II.

What's cooler than knights? Romans!

Personally I thought rome was never toppled as best in the series.
I like the fact that they try and take simulation to a top level, but sometimes you have to keep it simple to get the best results.

At least in shogun we'll have swords and horses again. And shields. blood.

...(and warlords!)

I agree, the total war series going in to age gunpowder weapons and industrialization doesen't do it justice, the total war engine was heavily modified for the Empire Series and later Napoleon.

What has always been an intrest by the total war community is to have the campaign mode as a multiplayer function, I liked the Medieval series, but I must admit that nothing is like the charm of the roman series.

I have yet to play the Shogun Series of total war, not having access to the first issue.

This game has been out for a while now and I gotta say it is an improvement on its closest predecessors. Sadly it also has plenty of, in my opinion, flaws that Medieval II did not. Romans > Knights > Samurai.
