LOTRO: BETA Accounts

Postby Gaera on Tue Oct 24, 2006 2:05 pm

Received my first one today,
This is how it looks like:

Will be downloading it over night, people say the beta is pretty stable:) which is good news :)
Ill share any other keys I'll get from now on with people that are interested of course :)

Dear Rake,

We are delighted to inform you that you have been selected to
participate in the next phase of The Lord of the Rings Online(tm):
Shadows of Angmar(tm) (LOTRO) Beta Program.

In order to take part in the Beta Program you will need to:
- Be over 18 years of age
- Be able to download a 2.0GB+ client
- Have a broadband connection
- Agree to the terms and conditions of the Preview and Non-Disclosure
Agreement (NDA) - By entering the Beta Program you are agreeing to
the terms of the NDA which can be viewed at
http://www.lotro-europe.com/nda

If you do meet all of these requirements then please read the
following instructions to get started.

Instructions

1 - First you will need to set up a free Codemasters Online Gaming
(COG) account. To do this, go to http://www.codemasters.com/cog/ and
follow the on-screen instructions to create a new account.

Once you have completed this section, an activation e-mail will be
sent to the e-mail address you provided. Check your e-mail and follow
the link to activate your account.

2 - Next, you will need to set up a subscription in your COG account.
Once your COG account is active, log onto it to create a new
subscription.

Click on the 'Click here to create a new subscription link'. From the
drop down product list, select LOTRO Beta. Enter your beta
registration key in the next field. Your beta registration key is:

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Finally, type the word you see in the box. After submitting this
information you should see a message saying 'Your subscription to the
LOTRO Beta has been created successfully.'

3 - Download and install the game client. If you haven't already done
so, now's the time to download and install the LOTRO game client. You
can download it from the following links:
Primary download site: http://xxxxxxxx

The client is approximately 2.0GB in size so it might take some time
to complete! Once download has completed, double-click the executable
to begin installation. Follow the on-screen instructions throughout
the installation process.

4 - Play away!
Once installed, run the LOTRO game client. A window will appear
asking you to enter your login and password. Here you should input
the COG username and password you chose in step 1. The game may atch
itself at this point. Once complete, simply log into the game and you
are ready to play!

Beta Support

To participate in discussions about the beta with your fellow testers
along with regular beta news updates, a special LOTRO beta forum has
been set up at
http://community.codemasters.com/forum/ ... .php?f=585

This beta forum is private and is only for those currently testing
the game. Remember that you are under NDA and are not to disclose
that you are even in beta, along with any details about the Beta
Program or the game.

Getting Started

Whilst you wait for your download to complete, please take the time
to familiarise yourself with the following:

What can I expect?
- The first thing to remember is that this is beta. You are one of
the lucky few, select people that have been given the privilege of
playing LOTRO before anybody else. This also means that the game is
still unfinished and is not at the final retail quality you may
expect. You could encounter bugs, issues and different problems
whilst playing!

What do I do if I find a bug?
- We'd really appreciate it if you would submit bug reports using
the form we have provided here: http://www.lotro-europe.com/bug.
Please be as concise and as detailed as you can. If you want tips on
how to write top-notch bug reports, you can read the guide we have
written for you, here:
http://community.codemasters.com/forum/ ... p?t=128462.
Will the servers be up 24/7?
- Whilst we will endeavour to keep the servers up as much as possible,
there will be scheduled downtimes when we will update the game with
new patches and updates. There will also be times when the servers
come down unexpectedly perhaps due to an error. In those cases we
will try to get them back up at the earliest possible convenience;
however, do please bear in mind that if they go down in the early
hours of the morning, it is unlikely that we will be able to reset
them until the start of the next working day.

Will I keep my character through to launch?
- We're afraid not. During the course of the different beta phases it
will be necessary to wipe the characters. This will happen fairly
regularly at the beginning and will become less frequent as time
moves on. We have to do this as the database becomes incompatible
with the new versions of code that we install. We will try to limit
doing this wherever possible.

Codemasters Online Gaming would like to thank you for your continued
support and assistance. We look forward to seeing you in Middle-
earth(tm)!

With kind regards,
The European LOTRO Team.

I haven't seen the latest updates on LOTRO, at one point they began to reset the chars every week, wich got very boring as I kept roaming in the same area and quests so I gave up on it.

Nontheless, you can check the game yourself now :D
I'd surely recommend it though, it's a good and stable game.
Much work and eye for quality and complexity are put in this game.

Did I mention it was fun too? :D

I guess I even might give it a try until Age of Conan comes out, as that has been pushed back to November.

I tried to play LotRO a few times during the last days and I just can't shrug the feeling that it's just a rip off of WoW done by amateurs. I had some small hopes for this game and even those haven't been met. Even the graphics somehow don't live up to what I was hoping to see after looking at the first screenshots. Maybe I was looking at a wrong game? (I just looked at the screenshots again - I think I really am playing a different game. And yes, I have everything maxed.)

The first thing that struck me was that I was unable to make a decent-looking male of any race. I thought it may have been a question of graphical style but even though WoW was greatly stylized, you could still create something easy on the eye there. Forget about making a good-looking elf in LotRO. The best looking race IMO are, ironically, the dwarves.

After I created a character it became apparent why it was so hard to make it looking good or at least natural - it's all in the name of coherence. If the characters would look not rubbish, they would stand out too much in the generally ugly world. It's all ugly! The brightness, contrast, colors, proportions - it all hurts my eyes. The sky is probably the worst - it's just a picture of a real sky which looks really weird as a background for the stylized graphics. I think Turbine tried to achieve a bit more realistic effect than Blizzard but I'd take WoW any day over that piece of... something. At least WoW had real style and felt more organic. Here everything is cheap. I've even seen some flares being used in conjunction with flames. FLARES.

And the UI... If you get 20 people in one spot you're not going to see anything else than their name tags. They're that big. Unless there are 5 NPCs amongst them that say something that shows up above their head - the letters will pour out of your screen and fill your entire living space - they will sleep in your bed and eat your cat, quickly devouring or having sex with everything that surrounds them (and who the hell uses Times New Roman for some two-liners in a game, honestly...). Besides that, the UI seems big and obscuring and yet you can't see the most vital things on it clearly: skill icons and condition icons. But the true testimony to the poor design of the UI is that when you fail to log onto a character (because you tried to switch a character during the first 25 seconds after exiting on your other toon) the only option you have is Quit. To Windows. When I first discovered it I was like dude, WTF?

Externals aside, it doesn't bring anything new to the table. The mechanics feel awfully like WoW's.

In general it's as if someone leaked WoW's early-development-stage design documents to Turbine and WoW never got released afterwards. But having said all that I also have to say that I wouldn't be surprised if I'd be solitary in that opinion and You'd actually like the game. Maybe I've been playing GW too much, maybe I haven't played WoW so long I don't remember how it was, maybe my standards are a bit high, maybe I just love being mean (I do!) - the fact is however, I simply can't feel the love in that game. And if I can't feel the love I sure as hell am not giving any of my love in return to it. But let me stress this once again: I'm not saying it's bad, don't play it. I'm saying if it doesn't hurt You, You might as well try it. It actually has some good things about it too, I just can't be bothered to write about them.
I'll probably be still playing it more or less sporadically, until the end of the beta. But just because I feel like playing a proper MMO now.

(I reserve the right to completely change my opinion after I played some more :P. )

EDIT: Oh, forgot one thing... I wasn't able to create an elf named Faeathael because it was considered "gibberish" by the game. Apparently any name with a combination of "aea" is gibberish. Great going, Turbine! Now we are all free from all the RP-spoiling nuts running around with names like Afjkgdaeasjl, Sjaeakldslif or (my personal favorite) Iifosjaea Sfkldeg. I was free to create an elf named Lotrsuks though (Yes, it doesn't really help the game that I'm not that fond of the entire LotR universe - although placing an MMO inside a world that is already "done" wasn't the brightest of ideas, so I feel excused to scorn the game even more for its universum. Hm, there's one more thing I just recalled slightly concerning that point, read on.)

I remember doing a quest that required me to kill one spy (a random mob) to gain a letter proving that there was a traitor amongst the good guys. I omit the fact that the first spy I stumbled upon had the letter (that was probably a welcome change from grinding items that were on 1.76% drop chance). The thing that got me dumbstruck a bit was that the letter pointed exactly at the rat. No nicknames, no codes, no initials. Plainly a name and a surname. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't using initials common in for-their-eyes-only correspondence in WoW? At any rate, if the bad guys are this stupid in LotR then no wonder they get beaten up by a pair of halfings. On the other hand, I don't know which side is dumber - couldn't Gandalf, like, summon the giant eagles at the beginning of the story? Guess he thought a walk would do the stubby halfings good... Or he's like Tzeentch. Gah! Enough, I'm tired...

It is obviously fake evidence planted by the real spy to draw attention elsewhere. Quite possibly the real spy is also the one who suggested there might be a spy in the first place. Or perhaps its a plot by the secret intelligence agency, arresting one of their own undercover agents to lul the real spy into a false sense of security in the hopes they'll slip... Yarr! ;)
