The 2nd Third Sun Harvesting Competition

This one will be 2 weeks long.

Prizes: Harvester with Highest Points gets 80gp
Harvester with 2nd Highest gets 50gp
Harvester with the most UR (Pre T6) gets 20gp

Rules: Harvesting materials to be mailed to Nildyar to qualify for points allocation
Ultra Rares only (only exception is Ancient Timber - T6)
Whoever mails me the materials gets the points
Nil and his chars are exempt from the competition

The points system will be a little different to last time:-

For all Ultra Rare resources up to T5 - 1 point per resource
ie If you harvest solely and receive 1 Prime Firegrass - you send the bale to Nildyar - you get 1 point.
Grab a group - if your yield is 6 bales, send the 6 bales to Nildyar, you get 6 points.

For T6 Spell Component items - based on the level required (500+) and danger in retrieveing, your points are increased:-
Ancient Timber = 1 point per Timber
Petrified Timber = 2 points per Timber
Haelifurite Ore = 2 points per Ore
Prime Steelweave = 3 points per Bale

Note: I am giving some notice before starting the competition. For you to be able to qualify for an Ultra Rare, your harvesting skill needs to be over 200 ... join a group with anyone who has a higher harvesting level and you will fly through to 200 quite quickly.

Harvesting for Beginners:-
There are 5 harvest types:-
Lumberjacking - chop trees - need an Axe
Reaping - cut grass - need a Sickle
Skinning - skin animals - need a Skinning Knife
Mining - sift through rocks - need a Pickaxe
Quarrying - sift through other rocks - need a Hammer

You get to choose a Primary and a Secondary skill. For beginners, Reaping and Skinning go well together. Mining and quarrying go well together. You willl notice that you have a skill in each of your chosen field and then there is a harvesting skill.

The harvesting skill allows you to farm any node as long as you have a tool for that resource and the farming is started by someone who qualifies to farm the node .... a bit confusing ???

Let me give you an example:-
Nildyar finds a Prime Firegrass (Reaping) which requires reapers to have a skill in reaping of over 200.

He calls to Thel who disses him and then agrees to come help - Thel is an accomplished Miner with 500+ skill - his secondary is Quarrying - his harvesting skill is 560.

Thel calls for Poll to come help - dissing again - but agrees to come help - Poll is pretty useless - he only Lumberjacking at 150 and quarrying at 180 but her Harvesting skill is 250.

They both have kitted themselves with all the tools to harvest any node. They try to farm the node but do not qualify. Nil laughs at them for trying - more dissing ....

We form a group and start a countdown .... 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... 0 ... Nil starts the harvest, Thel and Poll click the node and they will join in the harvest (this will only work if your harvesting skill is high enough and you have the tool for the harvest) .... and
Hey Presto - 3 x as much as 1 Harvester (normally).

So where do I harvest ?

The zones that we hunt will normally also have that level node - so if you want to get you skinng from 200 to 300, you might go to Trengal Keep and kill wolves - TK is for levels 20+. So because TK is blue on your rift map, those nodes may be visible in all blue rifts:- CIS and Shrine of the Flame.

So why should I start harvesting .....

This is a good question. I have a couple of reasons for you.

* Takes up the time between finding groups
* You can actually make some money from it (eg There has been no Prime Firegrass on broker now for a couple of weeks - I would buy Firegrass for up to 10gp, make a cloak and try to sell for 15-20gp)
* Will get components for your 50+ spells (if you choose Lumberjacking, reaping or mining)
* Compliments your crafting skill (Tailoring = reaping, Leatherworking = skinning, Blacksmith = mining etc)
* Helps other guildies with their crafting and spells
* Is cheap to do and is fun
* No timeframe - no need for group (although yields will be higher with more in the group)
* Increasing your Harvesting Skill will allow you to do other harvests besides your 2 chosen ones (if someone in the group starts the harvest first) - you just need to make sure you have the tool required (LJ = Axe, Reaping = Sickle etc)
* Get your Harvesting Skill to 501 and you can join us in APW (Lvl 48+) and harvest our farm mobs (Shiver, X99, Malazath, Senator and Zayguis) - Note:- the APW tool requies a 1pp deposit (fully refundable)
* You can win this and other competitions and be known as the "The Third Sun" Harvesting Champion or TTSHC.

If you need any more info - please talk to me in game.

Some tips for harvesting that you may or may not have known:-

* Up to 6 harvesters can harvest any node
* Having someone in your group who is a higher Harvester will increase you skills quicker
* They do not need to be in your chunk - they can be any level
* If your char has reaping 205, skinning 230 and harvesting at 300 - if you reset your primary and secondary skill, your harvesting skill is not reset
* You can keep a harvestable mob active by starting the harvest and cancelling it prior to 80% - do this every 10 secs or so and mob can be kept until reinforcements arrive
* Harvesting clothes and tools helps lots - talk to Thel, Def and Nil about getting kitted out
* Make sure you have all the tools in your bag - this will save you having to recall back to buy a sickle etc
* Be nice to Diplos - they can get some city buffs up to help with harvesting
* Try to have your mains (raiding) skill in Reaping, Skinning or Mining - we can harvest some mobs in APW - the materials from them make some uber APW gear

Have any more tips, please post them.
